Since 1911, thousands of dock workers walked to their shift here every day, 24 metres below the Elbe. The walls show what is swimming above your heads. Not all of it is a fish.
Before 1911, tens of thousands of shipyard and dock workers had to cross the Elbe by ferry every morning, often in vain when fog or ice set in. Instead of ramps, the tunnel got four lifts on each side that carried horse carts, and later cars, down to the tubes. The reliefs are by sculptor Hermann Perl.
Go down and walk a little way into the tube. You do not need to reach the other side. Find the relief that belongs in a river the least, re-enact it as a team right in front of it and take a photo.
