Shipowner Carl Laeisz called his wife Sophie Poodle because of her curls and named a ship after her. Ever since, every ship of the company has had a name starting with P. That is why a poodle sits on the roof of the Laeiszhof.
The company's sailing ships were world famous as the Flying P-Liners, among them the Pamir, the Passat and the Peking. The Peking is back in Hamburg today.
