Munichs Kindl
In the Munich coat of arms, a small monk can be seen, affectionately called the “Münchner Kindl”, the "Munich Child". The Child can be found in many places throughout Munich. Find a "Kindl" on your way through the city.
Munich was founded in 1158 in a location where a monastery already existed. This is where the city's name comes from. "Bei den Mönchen" (”with the monks”) eventually became Munich. In the 19th century, the monk in the coat of arms was replaced by the Münchner Kindl. It holds the book of oaths in its left hand, containing all the oaths that employees in Munich's offices had to take. The right hand is raised for the oath. The version that adorns the city's coat of arms today was designed by graphic designer Eduard Ege in 1957.
