Legend has it that the builder of the church, Jörg von Halspach, promised his soul to the devil if he would help him with the construction of the church, as the work was progressing slowly. In return, Satan demanded that no heavenly light should fall into the church. When the church was completed, Halspach tricked the devil. He brought him to a place where no windows can be seen in the church. The devil stomped angrily and left not only a large footprint but also an icy wind that still blows around the church today.
